Stuffed our bellies with lies,
Screaming with shoulds until we could
not take another bite
Fed us primp and flatten stick straight
no lines
We tried for six months
but it’s not safe to keep going
Now wait for a break in the waves
My postpartum depression
has never let up,
so why add another to my plate?
I guess it’s my diet,
or poor lifestyle choices
or my husband's...
You inched your way towards my breasts and latched beautifully. Your small mouth knew exactly what to do, but I sure didn’t. I didn’t know how long to keep you on each breast, if I was holding you in the right position, if you were getting enough milk, if my nipple soreness would go away, if my milk would eventually flow like my tears that streamed each time I looked at you.

When he cries out at night now, I get almost the same rush of adrenaline (or is it cortisol??) that I got when he’d wake as a newborn. Like I have to jump up and be ready as if it’s a fire alarm.
